8th Grade Performance Task
Contributed by: New Standards
Description of student task:
Gina sees this sign on a track:
1.6 kilometers per mile
Then Gina finds a closer approximation of the same rate in a book:
1.61 kilometers per mile.
Gina converts a certain number of miles to kilometers. First she
converts using
1.6 kilometers per mile, then she tries it using 1.61 kilometers
per mile.
Her two answers are different-by exactly one kilometer!
What is the number of miles Gina converted? Show or explain how
you know.

Discussion:
This task is related in content and context to the task Laps,
Miles, and Kilometers.
The difference between the two given scale factors is small-only
at 100 miles is there a difference of one kilometer. Yet, for some
situations, this difference could be important. Bicyclists, for
example, commonly ride 100 miles, precisely measuring and timing
their efforts.
Note that the exact conversion factor is 1.609344 km per mile. A
kilometer is about as long as a mile
