The grades 6-8 performance tasks come from several sources.

Some tasks cover multiple content areas. All tasks include Science as Inquiry and Math Problem-Solving components. The specific inquiry skills are displayed in the assessment chart for the task.

 Mathematics
Air in Soil (NYSED) Use water to measure the porosity of topsoil and determine air space in topsoil.

The Blizzard of 1993 (NYSED) Reading and interpreting the information from a barograph from a major winter storm.

Bounce Ball (MSPAP) Investigating with the bouncing balls to measure changes in the type of energy they possess.

Can They Compare (NS) Converting a distance from one unit of measurement to another unit of measurement.

Changing Fractions (NS) Demonstrate how a fraction changes in value when only its denominator doubles or when only its numerator doubles.

Changing Ramp Heights (NYSED) Determine the relationship between the height of a ramp and the energy of a ball.

Classification of Materials (RAND) This task assesses students' abilities to classify, organize and present data, and describe objects and their characteristics.

Creeping (NYSED) Observe, measure, and graph a model of slow downslope movement representing soil creep.

Crustal Sinking (NYSED) Model the interaction between the Earth's crust and upper mantle.

Density (CCSSO) Construct aluminum foil boats and see how many washers they can support before sinking.

Density and Buoyancy (OSED) Practice measuring, calculating, and predicting density and buoyancy.

Density of Minerals (NYSED) Formulate and apply rules used to compare and rank mineral samples.

Estimating (APU) Make simple observations and estimations on the mass, volume, length and area of various objects.

Heat Retention (CCSSO) Test four materials to see which would be best for use as a heat mass.

Height of Bounce (NYSED) Determine the relationship between the height of release and rebound of a ping pong ball.

Ice Melting (OSED) Design investigations to test various materials to prevent heat gain in frozen water.

Kilometers Per Mile (NS) This task ask to use two slightly different conversion factors to convert miles to kilometers.

Laps, Miles, and Kilometers (NS) Calculate measurements in one system of units to another and also work with fraction and decimal representations within the same task.

Peat Pots (NYSED) Calculate the rate of capillarity in a model of a soil when peat pot is placed in water.

Pond-water Populations (OSED) Examine the growth of algae or other organisms in aquarium or pond water.

Predator/Prey Relationship (CCSSO) Use data to write a response to a proposal to reduce the lynx population.

Probing Under the Surface (NYSED) Use a measuring stick to determine the shape of the inside of the bottom of a box.

Puddles and Soil (NYSED) Examine the permeability of soils.

Pulse (TIMSS) Examine changes in pulse rate with exercise.

Reaction Rates (CCSSO) Determine the relationship between temperature and reaction rate of a mixture.
